"My Way" Curse
Wherever I go, I always find karaoke machines. In beer houses, bars, restaurants, and even in a drinking spree beside the house of the celebrant, all is equipped with karaokes.
Filipinos really love celebrations - from fiestas to birthdays, they always find ways on how to celebrate the special day. To make this celebrations much joyful, they rent karaoke machines so their visitors will not be bored.
Anyway, there's this urban legend which made Frank Sinatra's song famous. I think all karaoke machines here in the Philippines have it. This song is a favorite of adult Filipinos, especially men. They sing this song in a drinking spree. Afterwards, it will cause death.
I am talking about "My Way".
The Song
"My Way" is a song popularized by Frank Sinatra. Its lyrics were written by Paul Anka and set to music based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed in 1967 by Claude François and Jacques Revaux, with lyrics by Claude François and Gilles Thibault. Comme d'habitude had in turn originally been written in English, titled "For Me". Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French song or the earlier English version. "My Way" is often quoted as the most covered song in history.[1]
The song was released on 1969, recorded December 30, 1968.[1]

The lyrics seemed simple and not paranormal. However, the first stanza makes me feel horrified. Well, it says:
And now, the end is hereIt's telling you that the end (of the one singing the song) is finally here (perhaps, to kill you). Could it be the reason why it was considered a curse? Or just misunderstanding it. Well, for me the killing is just a coincidence.
The stanza doesn't really create a curse that brings death to a person who sings it. In fact, my above speculation is part of the rumors of people who are making explanations. They thought the stanza is the key and trigger to one's death.
Actually the song killed at least six people. It'll be considered paranormal if those people were killed by an accident or just died without any reason. However, they are all killed by gunshot, struggling from a fight against someone.
Some bars and restaurant actually deleted song in the karaoke's playlist. They believe this song really is a curse.
According to one of our readers[3], whenever one got a score of 99 then another got a score of 100, the one with 99 score would shot the one who got the highest.
Conclusion
Me, myself, I admit, I criticize the voice of a singer as well as the way or their version of singing a song. If they don't achieve my standard, I eventually say a judgement. It's not only me who do the same of course. Each of us have standards or expectations of best and worst. None is exempted for that.
In my opinion, the real grave reason of the murder is CRITICISM. People laugh whenever they see or hear something unlikable. A word PIKON (irritation) engulfs this person, and that is the true trigger of death.
People who are hardly drunk start to loss the ability of patience. They become more sensitive of their feelings. They also start to have violent attitudes. They become brave, which gives them the ability to kill without horror.
There's no such thing as curse in Frank Sinatra's song "My way". What created these killings is the result of peoples character.
If you are asking if this incident only happens in the Philippines, the answer in NO. Though not the same song, but still the same situation.
According to a website[4], a Malaysian man killed for hogging the microphone at a bar. Then, a Thai man killed eight of his neighbors in a rage after they sang John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Karaoke-related assaults have also occurred in the United States, including at a Seattle bar where a woman punched a man for singing Coldplay’s “Yellow ” after criticizing his version.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it's an urban legend. Well, playing a hopeless song in an era of depression, i think it's psychologically reasonable to have such cases.
